Robert Crawford and Helen Yuille

........their story.

Robert and Helen were found to be the parents by finding the marriage certificate of their son John. Robert was deceased by this time but Helen was still alive. The birth of John was found and the marriage for Robert and Helen. Other children were found by accident. A daughter, Helen, was found using a research site. Only these two children appeared. By looking for the death of Robert a son was found, also called Robert. This lad died at about 14 years years old and his father had already pre-deceased him. By using the census information to look for John, a brother, William, was with him in 1871. This added yet another son to the family.

Robert was a collier at Napierhall in 1838 and was at Springbank in 1840. It seems he had become a Pit Sinker before his death.

Helen was still alive in 1866 as she signed the birth certificates for her grandchildren, twins Helen & James. She must have been around the Maryhill area as she signed the death certificate for her son Robert in 1859. He was at Keppochill but was lodging with another family. It seems as if she was in the area but cannot be found on the census and no death certificate can be found for her. When William was married she is not down as deceased in December 1871. So where was she? It looks as if Helen 'farmed out' her children when they were just old enough to be sent to work. John was only 13 when he was with a family at Keppochhill and was an Iron Stone Miner.

Robert Crawford died sometime between 1850 and 1855. He married Helen Yuille 17 September 1837 in Glasgow, Lanark. She may have been born 27 May 1813 in Glasgow. A guess for her birth is between 1800-1821, and died after 1871.

Children of Robert Crawford and Helen Yuille are:

John Crawford, born 24th April 1838, Maryhill, Barony, Lanark and died 12th October 1901, Violet Bank, Spindleknowe Road, Uddingston, Lanarkshire. He married Mary Stevenson on 9th August 1861, Shuttle Street, Kilsyth, Scotland.

Helen Crawford, born 30th July 1840, Maryhill, Barony, Lanark and died 23rd August 1928, 16 Carrickarden Street, Glasgow. She married William McCracken on 4th July 1862, 21 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow.

Robert Crawford, born before 6th March 1845 and died 6th March 1859, Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. He was aged only 14 when he died and he had been working in a bottle 'brewer'. He had been living at Keppochill.

William Crawford, born 8th September 1850 at Maryhill, Glasgow. He married Mary Brown on 29th December 1871, Newfieldyke, Slamannan.

There may well have been some other children as there are rather large gaps in between those found. Helen signed the birth certificates for twin grandchildren and was, therefore, alive in 1866. William may have been born any time between 1847 and 1851 as his age differs from marriage certificate and census records.

 Notes

I have been trying to establish the parents of Helen Yuille and did consider Thomas Yuill and Janet Dobbie as possible candidates owing to them having a daughter Helen born in 1813. Janet Dobbie died 20 June 1864 at 121 Weaver Street, Glasgow and her daughter Helen Taylor registered the death. This meant that Helen Yuill married a Mr Taylor. The marriage was found in order to eliminate the possibility of Helen Crawford having a possible re-marriage.

The Helen Yuill, from Thomas and Janet Dobie,  married John Taylor in 1840 which eliminated the possibility of her being one in the same. 'Our' Helen Yuille was married to Robert Crawford at this very time. This does not help find out more about 'our' Helen Yuille but at least it does conclusively eliminate one possible family!
