Archibald Elliiot Caldwell
During my research I have found some
interesting information about the Caldwell family. I am including it here,
although I am really only interested in where the Crawfords come into the
picture, as it might help to find the descendants.
Mrs Agnes Caldwell (37, housewife)
arrived in the Port of Philadelphia on the 14th June 1888, together with 8
children. Archibald (15), Robert (13), Catherine(11), Mary(9), Agnes (7), John
(5), James (3) and William (1). These ages are not accurate as I have looked at
the actual birth records for a few of them.
It appears that they travelled without
the father. There is a John Caldwell travelling with a probable brother in
November 1887, arriving in the Port of Philadelphia. Perhaps John went on ahead
as his wife was pregnant and had a child in February 1888. This John and William
arrived on board the Manitoban from Glasgow and both gave their occupation as
miners.
Here is the family of John Caldwell and
Agnes Spiers Elliot:
John Caldwell was born June 1848 in
Scotland. He married Agnes Speirs Elliot on the 9th April 1869 in Irvine,
Ayrshire, Scotland, daughter of Robert Elliot and Mary Smith. She was born in
January 1850.
John was a coal miner and his residence
in April 1869 was New Cumnock, Ayrshire. In 1900 they were living at Henderson,
Pennsylvania. When they married Agnes was a knitter and lived at Irvine,
Ayrshire. They were married by a Robert Crawford, Minister of Irvine. (I
wonder!!!)
On the 1900 US Census it is stated that
they have 15 children of which 11 are alive.
