Cornelia McCracken
(1867-1954)
Cornelia Yuill
McCracken was born on the 12th August 1867 at 299 Garscube Road, Glasgow,
and died 1st February 1954 in 16 Carrickarden Street, Glasgow. She married
George Patrick Hay on the 29th December 1893 in St Joseph's R C Church, Glasgow,
son of Robert Hay and Theresa Marley. He was born 03 July 1867 8 Crown Street,
Hutchesontown, Glasgow.
It would seem that Cornelia might have been named after a Yuille aunt, as the
name does not appear anywhere else in the Crawford line. When she married
George, he was a widower with a son George born in 1889. It seems that Cornelia,
or Nellie or Ellen, as she was known, had a son before she married as a son,
William McCracken signed her death certificate.
When Nellie married she was a French polisher living at 58 Lyon Street, Glasgow.
In 1901 they lived at 20 Burnside Street, Cowcaddens, Glasgow and her address is
given on her sisters Poor fund application as Woodside Road c/o Hay in 13 May
1907, and 16 Carrickarden Street, Glasgow between 1927 and 1954 where she died
from Cardio Vascular Degeneration and Senile Exhaustion. George was a glass
silverer and glass cutter so it looks like he was making mirrors. He lived at 35
Grove Street, Glasgow when they married.
New information 1st September 2005
In 1892 Conelia's brother, James, was living at 58 Lyons Street, Glasgow so it
would seem they were there together.
On 11th July 1891, Cornelia's domicile was given as 31 (and what I could
decipher as something field Street) Mearnsfield? Street, Partick. She had been a
warehouse worker. By 1907 she is living with her husband at Woodside Road and
from at least 1927, 16 Carrickarden Street. Her son William, was still there
when he died.
Child of Cornelia McCracken is:
William James McCracken, born 11 July 1891, Maternity Hospital,
Blackfirars, Glasgow and died 25 April 1957, 16 Carrickcarden Street,
Milton, Glasgow. He was at 106 Hopehill Road, St George's, Glasgow in
1901.
William was working as a lavatory attendant when he died from bladder
cancer and a friend from a few doors away signed his death certificate.
He was never married and it would appear he had no children.
This is now the end of this line.
