The
Crawford Family
The ancestry of the Crawford line can only begin with Robert and Helen
until another generation back is found, this Crawford family originated in
Maryhill, Glasgow and migrated to the surrounding districts.
It seems that Robert
Crawford died sometime before 1855, and his widow seems to have vanished after
August 1867
and no death record can be
found. Various children have been found for them by accident but they seem to be
a
difficult family to track, not only due to the fact
that Crawford is a very common Scots name.
The
family
have been discovered on the 1841 census at Springbank. It is very difficult to
read but when we know who we are looking for we can identify them. They are at
what looks like 'Lang's Land', South side of the Street, Garscube Road. From
this we can see how old they were. Robert was 26, Helen 25, John 3 and Helen 10
months. There is also James, 15, but there in no relationship recorded in 1841,
but he is most likely to be a brother to Robert. Neither Robert or James were
born in the county which is of no help what-so-ever. My theory is that they were
not from very far away and may have been from Kilsyth which was in Stirlingshire
at that time. It was also a mining town and the canal went through it. As
Springbank was on the bank of the Canal it would be very simple for Robert and
James to have gone from Kilsyth to Maryhill via this mode of transport, perhaps
on a coal barge.

From
left to right, from Garscube Road, Springbank is between the co-op
and the church. Close-up of the church. Springbank with all new
houses. From Springbank, Partick Thistle FC Ground. (No wonder
football was in the family!)
