Jeanie Crawford

(1877-1905)

I am convinced that the photo on the left is that of Jeanie Crawford. It was sent to me by AnneMarie Hayes and was un-named. Why am I convinced? She looks like other members of the Crawford family. Take a look at Hannah and, more especially, Isabella. She also looks like some of my aunts photos.

Jeanie Stevenson Crawford was born 29th November 1877 in 135 Main Street, Maryhill, Glasgow, and died 5th March 1905 in 3 Grigud Terrace, Uddingston. She married John Adam Andrew 7th October 1898 in The Public Hall Uddingston, son of John Andrew and Catherine Marshall. He was born 19th August 1869 in Blackstone, Bay Street, Port Glasgow, Renfrew.

Jeanie was the youngest daughter of John Crawford and Mary Stevenson. She married the brother of her sister Helen's husband. (i.e. two brothers married two sisters). She was with her parents at 153 Main Street, Maryhill in 1881. When she married she was a domestic servant at Bislet Bank, Spindlehowe Road, Uddingston. John was at 6 Morrison Street, Maryhill in 1881. He was a coal miner and lived at 38 Clova Terrace, Uddingston when they married. In 1901 they were living at  Palmers Road, Uddingston. Jeanie is buried at Bothwell Park Cemetery Lair 1047 : Section B with her father who died only a few years before.

There is an un-named child also buried with Jeanie and other children are:-

John Marshall Andrew was born 15th September 1890, Violet Bank Place, Uddingston. Died 13th August 1976, Christchurch, New Zealand. He married Ethel May Harris on the 8th April 1925 and had three daughters.

Robert Andrew was born 29th October 1901, Violet Bank Place, Uddingston and died 30th November 1902, 27 Caldervale, Blantyre. He was buried on 2nd December 1902, Bothwell Park Cemetery, aged 1 year Lair 1047 Section B.

David Andrew was born 13th December 1904 and died 5 days later. He was buried 18th December 1904, Bothwell Park Cemetery aged 5 days Lair 1047 Sect B.

Mary Steenson (sic) Andrew born 16th November 1903 in Uddingston, Lanarkshire Scotland. She died 24th December 1953, New Zealand. She married Thomas Brady (Bradie) 14th July 1922 at Great Hamilton Street, Glasgow. Then re-married John McDonald Cox in New Zealand.

UPDATE

Anne Marie Hayes has found the death record of John Adam Andrew which confirms that he did, indeed, emigrate to New Zealand about 1906. It also states that he had a son and daughter both still alive at his time of death, from his marriage to Jeanie Crawford.

John died on the 18th April 1949 at Silverstream Hospital, and was cremated on the 20th April 1949 at Karori, Wellington, New Zealand. His residence at the time of his death was 49 Thornycroft Avenue, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. His occupation was Coal Miner.

I did know about another child other than those listed above, but I had no idea if it was male or female. Now I know it was a female child and the son who survived must have been John Andrew. Perhaps there are descendants from these two children of Jeanie's?

John Adam Andrew re-married, about 1911, in New Zealand, Mary Turner Spence. From the death record it was found she was still alive and aged 57 when John died. They had two sons and two daughters as listed below.

Children of John Andrew and Mary Spence are:

Robert Marshall Andrew, born 31st August 1912, Denniston, Westland, New Zealand. Died November 1990. He married Betty Nation in 1939 at Presbyterian Church, Wellington, New Zealand and had descendants.

Catherine Elizabeth Andrew, born 2nd Aug 1913, Denniston, Westland, New Zealand and died 1st December 1975 at Lower Hutt, New Zealand. She married Ernest Warner on the 20th March 1937 at St Peters, Wellington, New Zealand and had descendants.

Annie Isabel Andrew, born 1st April 1915, Huntly, New Zealand and died 8th May 1915 Huntly, New Zealand.

Daniel Spence Andrew, born 3rd June 1917, New Zealand. Died October 1989. He never married.

Margaret Ethel Johnston Andrew, born 25th November 1925, Wellington, New Zealand. She married Maurice Nelson Deadman on the 16th March 1946 at Lower Hutt, New Zealand and had descendants.

Catherine Elizabeth Andrew, (Mrs Warner); Robert Marshall Andrew; Mae Morrison Andrew (Mrs Cox); John Marshall Andrew; Margaret Ethel Andrew (Mrs Deadman); Daniel Andrew.

This picture was sent by Barry Warner. Must have been taken before 1953.

John Adam Andrew was cremated at Karori Crematorium, Wellington, on the 20th April 1949. His second wife, Mary Turner Spence, was also cremated there on the 20th July 1956

I now have to wait and see if anything more can be added to all of this.
