Children

Thomas Crawford

(1873-1964)

Thomas Crawford was born 1st February 1873 in 41 Whitelaw Street, Maryhill, Glasgow, and died 23rd May 1946 in Garscube Mill Cottage, Killermont, Bearsden.

He married, firstly Margaret McGowan Reid 28th July 1899 in United Presbyterian Church, Alloa, Clackmannan, daughter of William Reid and Jemima Simpson. She was born 20th January 1880 in 369 Garscube Road, Glasgow, and died 28th June 1931 in 3 Kilmuir Street, Glasgow. He married, secondly,  Sarah Halliday Anderson 29th August 1931 in 21 Hope Street, Glasgow, daughter of Robert Anderson and Mary Swan. She was born 24th November 1889 in Main Street, Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, and died 27th April 1976 in Western Infirmary, Glasgow.

Thomas was the elder of twins, his brother being David. Thomas was with the rest of his family in 1881 at 153 Main Street, Maryhill. He was then with his sister at 1 Wellwynd Street, Airdrie in 1891 and was an unemployed coal miner. When he married Margaret he was a Foundry Furnaceman and was living at 8 Kirkgate, Alloa. He was probably working at Greenfield Street Foundry. (He would have been living at Kirkgate when a grandfather from the Gray family was born). By 1901 he had moved to 14 Castle Street, Alloa (he was still there in 1904) and was back to being a Coal Miner Hewer. After 1901 he was living at Fishcross or Sauchie. In 1931 he was an Estate Labourer and lived at 3 Kilmuir Street, Glasgow and in 1946 a Joiners Labourer.

Thomas died less than two months after his twin brother whom he was buried alongside on 25 May 1946, Plot N425, New Kilpatrick Cemetery, Bearsden.

Margaret Reid lived at 23 Cameron St, Barony, Lanark in 1881. When she married Thomas she was a mill worker and lived at 8 Kirkgate, Alloa.

Sarah was a domestic servant in 1931 and lived at 39 Winton Drive, Glasgow where she must have been working. In 1976 she lived at Garscube Mill Cottage, Bearsden and was buried 29 April 1976, Plot N425, New Kilpatrick Cemetery, Bearsden. They had no children.

Children of Thomas and Margaret are:

John Crawford was born 23 September 1899, 8 Kirkgate, Alloa

Annie Crawford, born about 1903 in Glasgow.

1911 Census

I discovered that Thomas and his family were at 10 Stable Row Coalsnaughton. This was owned by the Alloa Coal Company. he was still a coal miner, hewer.

The son John was still alive and there as a daughter Annie. Unfortunately, both names are far too long a shot to find anything more for, unless by some chance.

I have looked at the Valuation Rolls for Thomas. I did not look at the 1911-1912 book but took the next one which is fro 1912-1913. I found him at 15 Devonside and the yearly rent was £3 10s.0d.; also owned by the Alloa Coal Company.

Crawford's came to Clackmannanshire

I have wondered why and when the Crawford family arrived in Clackmannanshire since they were from Maryhill. Obviously it was because they were coal miners and went where the work was. It seems to be that Thomas was the first to arrive since his mother-in-law was born in Alloa. His wife was living at 8 Kirkgate when they married and he was working at a foundry. All of her children were born in Lanarkshire but she is with Thomas on the 1901 census, in Alloa when she is a widow.

He then moved to Coalsnaughton/Devonside and eventually his brother James arrives there.
