John Yuille & Mary McKenzie

This family was has to be some family connection to Helen Yuille.

There are many variations on the spelling of the name Yuille therefore I am trying to keep this to a minimum with Yuill and Yuille.

In 1851, Helen Crawford was residing with a widow, Mary Yuill, at 11 Cathcart Street, Govan, Glasgow. Helen is recorded as being a servant, Mary was 'formerly grocer'. From this entry I suspected that Mary was some sort of relative by marriage.

I found Helen Crawford in 1861, as a domestic servant to a Dr John Yuill and residing at 9 Crown Circus, Govan. Listed above her, as a visitor, was her mother Helen (Yuille) Crawford. I suspected that John was also related and possibly a son of Mary Yuill.

Helen Crawford married William McCracken and named one of her daughter's after Dr John Yuill's wife and another after their daughter. The another daughter after her own mother. Naming children after an employer's family is rather an odd thing, especially before her own mother's name. This added to my theory that John was a relation of some sort. It is still a puzzle as to why mother and daughter were never listed as any sort of relation on the censuses.

I then looked for Mary Yuill on the 1841 census, hoping her husband would still be alive then. I did find a family which looked to be correct at Renfrew St Bains Place, Barony. The husband was John Yuill who was a wright and joiner. From the little information on the 1841 census, I could only find that John was born about 1781 and in Scotland. he was obviously not born in Barony. He also died between 1841 and 1851. From an International Genealogical Index search I discovered a marriage for John Yuill and Mary McKenzie on the 23rd April 1815 in Glasgow, Lanark. Also from the 1851 census I found that Mary was born about 1791 in Appin, Argyll. It also looks as if she died between 1851 and 1855. I then searched for possible children for this couple.

'John Yuill, Wright in Glasgow & Mary McKenzie, residing there, were married 23rd April 1815'.

John Yuill is no longer listed in the Trade Directories in 1845 but Duncan is. It would appear from this that John died circa 1844 and his son Duncan, took over the business.

 

In 1843 and 1844 John was a Glass Merchant at 46 Gordon Street, Glasgow and his home residence was 19 Bain's Place, Renfrew St Glasgow. On the 1841 census the family were at Bain's Place which places the family there from at at least 1841. From at least 1829 until 1934 they were at Mitchell Street. It was also surprising to find Duncan there in 1848 which makes it seem that the family had owned these properties. Perhaps there will be more information in the sasines!

Jean Gardner Yuille, born 8th July 1820 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Wright and Mary McKenzie had a 4th child born 8th July named Jean Gardner Robt Whyte & Ogle Hagie(?) Wit'.

? Yuill.

Duncan McKenzie Yuille, born 21st August 1823 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Wright and Mary McKenzie had a 6th child born 21st May named Duncan Robt White & Agles Haigie(?) Wit'.

 

Ann Yuille. born 20th October 1825 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Glazier, Anderston; and Mary McKenzie had a 7th child born 20th October and baptised 13th November named Ann James Bryce & William Fulton Wit'.

 

Archibald Yuille, born 6th February 1828 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Wright, and Mary McKenzie had a 8th child born 6th February and baptised 2nd March named Archibald.  Robert Whyte & Ogle Hastie(sic) Wit'.

 

Mary Yuille, born 12th December 1829 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Wright, Mitchell Street; and Mary McKenzie had a lawful daughter their 9th child born 12th December 1829 and baptised 10th January 1830 named Mary.  Robert Stewart(?) & Robert White Wit'.

 

Robert Towart Yuille, born 26th October 1831 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Wright, Mitchell Street; and Mary McKenzie had a lawful son their 10th child born 26th October 1831 and baptised 20th November 1831 named Robert Towart.  Archibald Yuill & John Kellar Wit'.

 

Agnes Yuille, born 4th June 1834 in Barony, Lanarkshire.

OPR 'John Yuill, Glazier, Mitchell Street; and Mary McKenzie had a lawful daughter their 11th child born 18th June 1834 and baptised 6th july 1834 named Agnes.  James B Higgins & Robert Smith Wit'.

From this list of children it was apparent that Dr John Yuille was more than likely to be the son. I searched further in the hope of actually confirming that he was.
