The
Gormals came to Scotland from Ireland. I have
found that the name was Gorman in a couple of
instances.
From
some information I was given many years ago but
has now been lost, I believe the Gormals may
have been farmers and, indeed, land owners, in
the Newtownards area of Northern Ireland. It is
not likely that they came to Scotland during the
potato famine.
I
think the information I found was from a link
sent to me for land registry in Ireland. See
Public Records Office (N Ireland) on right side links.

Census
The census records are in family groups for each
year. I should eventually make a link to the
person on the page but for now you will have to
search - there are not many and it should be
easy enough to find them.
To
go directly to a person on a census from their
page, the census dates appear highlighted within
the text. Click on the date (e.g.1881).
You will go directly to that person who will
appear at the top of the page view. Saves you
hunting about!

There is a WW1 medal card which was issued
to a John Gormal, Private 351490, Royal
Highlanders. He received the Victory Medal
and British Medal. I do not know which John
Gormal this was.
A group of
Gormals appears in the East Lothian area of
Scotland in 1861 as well as a family in
Irvine, Ayrshire in 1851 and a family in
Airdrie in 1841. These have not been found
to be connected but perhaps they are from a
bit further back.
It is unlikely
that any more information about our family
will be found Further back in Scotland as
they seem to have arrived here shortly
before the 1871 census.
