Christina Meiklejohn

(1902-1952)

Christina Meiklejohn was born 27th May 1902 at 3 Park View, Stockton and died 1st September 1952 at 12 Hareburn Road, Tillicoultry. She married Robert Crawford. For their family click here.

Just a couple of months before Christina's 6th Birthday, her mother died and just 28 days after her 6th birthday her father died, thus leaving the young children orphaned. Christina's mother's own family had all died so the only family left were in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. Her father's sister, Elizabeth Meiklejohn, went down to Stockton-on-Tees and registered her brother's death then brought the young children back to Scotland.

Their grandmother, Christian Meiklejohn was still alive as well as a married uncle so they at least had some family in Scotland. It must have been a dreadful time for the youngsters, they have lost both parents, probably met the aunt for the first time and then she uproots them and takes them to Scotland where they probably met their granny and other family for the first time, adding to that a strange accent.

When Christina was 11½ her grandmother died. Her uncle having died the previous year. Then at 16 days after her 16th birthday, the very aunt who had brought her up, died. Christina and her younger sister were then looked after by their elder sister Margaret who died aged just 38. By that time Christina was married with a family.

Christina's elder brother had run off to New Zealand, abandoning his wife and children and her young sister married and went to Canada soon after Christina had her first babies.

It is bad enough for any child to loose both parents, but then to loose all the 'adoptive parents' as well and then siblings, Christina must have felt very much abandoned throughout her life and may partly responsible for her having 15 children.
