Elizabeth Gordon

(1792-1871)

Elizabeth Gordon was christened 2nd January 1792 in Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, and died 8th August 1871 in Devon, Parish of Clackmannan. She married (1) Alexander McQueen (McEwan) 24th Nov 1816 in Clackmannan, Clackmannan, son of William McQueen and Marion Anderson. Elizabeth then had a dalliance with John Watson, there is no evidence of a marriage. She married (3) John Meiklejohn 21st March 1829 in Clackmannan, Clackmannanshire, son of David Meiklejohn and Christian Scotland.

Elizabeth and her family were at Craigerie Villiage, Clackmannan in 1851. After John Meiklejohn died she move to Devon Iron Works (Bankhead farm) and was there in 1871. Her sons William McEwan and David Meiklejohn were also there. She died from apoplexy which was a stroke in those days, after about 3 weeks.

John Watson was a labourer but nothing more is known about him.

Alexander McQueen was a labourer at Kennet and then an engineer which was probably for the pit there. The name of McQueen is also McEwan in this family. One explanation could be due to the fact that it was more common than not, not to be able to read or write. The same stigma was not attached to it as is nowadays. The two names became mixed up and was probably due to being spelled out phonetically.....Mc... Que ....En - which sounds like McEwan but reads as McQueen. It has been confirmed that the name was spelled both ways in the family with one son being always James McQueen and his brother William McEwan. So it is not just my 'fitting' folk together.

Margaret Watson was born 5th May 1826, Clackmannan. and died 7th December 1860, Kirkgate, Alloa. She married Thomas Miller 27th August 1847, Clackmannan and then James Dalrymple 29th January 1855, Free Church Alloa.

Children of Elizabeth Gordon and Alexander McQueen are:

William McEwan was born about 1813 in Clackmannan. He died 19th July 1887, Sauchie, Parish of Clackmannan. He married Helen Millar 17th December 1844, Clackmannan.

Alexander McQueen was born 24th June 1820, Clackmannan and died between 1848-1875. He may have married Margaret McQueen.

James McQueen was born 23rd April 1823, Whins, Alloa, and christened 27th April 1823 Alloa Clackmannanshire and died 20th April 1884, Institution Place, Tillicoultry. He married Ann McMaster 12th December 1856, Blairlogie, Perth.
