John Meiklejohn
(1863-1925)
John Meiklejohn was born 16th December 1863 in 19 Mill
Street, Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, and died 8th October 1925 in
York Co, Timmins, Ontario Canada. He married
Annie MacGregor
1st January 1902 in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, daughter of William McGregor
and Janet McKenzie.
She was born about 1872, and died 14th July 1911 in 33 Mill Street, Tillicoultry.
She is buried in Tillicoultry cemetery. He re-married Janet Condie in
1913 at Tillicoultry. Daughter of John Condie and Mary Forrest.
In 1881 John lived at 81 Mill Street,
Tillicoultry and was a Wool Mill Worker. In 1891 he was a factory engine keeper
and lived at 3 Green Place, Alva. By 1901 he had moved back to Shillinghill, Tillicoultry.
Annie was a Mill Worker at Tillicoultry in 1902.
So far, only one son has been found for John and Annie.
David Meiklejohn was born
14th April 1908, 33 Mill Street, Tillicoultry.
Nothing else has
been found for John nor his son David after Annie died. I can find no death
listed in Scotland for either of them nor any marriages. It would appear that
they must have emigrated.
February 2007
- I have found John at 33 Mill Street, Tillicoultry in the valuation books
for 1920-1921 and he was an engineman. So he was at least in Tillicoultry
until 1920. The valuation books run between Whitsun and Whitsun the
following year. Given time to correlate and print the books, there could be
a years difference.
New Information!
I have recently discovered that
John and David emigrated to Canada on the 21 March 1924 on board the
Metagama to St John, New Brunswick, Canada. There address, from which they
left, was listed as The Glen, Devonside, Tillicoultry and their occupation
given as miners. John had a wife, Janet, with him. I discovered
a David Meiklejohn returning to Devonside in 1931 with a Janet Meiklejohn,
quite a bit older than him. I concluded that this could be a second wife to
his father. As I have never found a death for the son in Scotland, I also
concluded that he must have returned to Canada. I then found a record for
this in 1931.
This was a fantastic find as it
gives a lot more information. It clearly stated that Janet, who was also
returning, was his mother. They had been in Canada before between 1924 and
1931 and the residence was Dome Mine, South Procupine, Ontario. With them
was a Margaret Miller and her return address was the same. It also states
the person and address at Devonside, this was a cousin. (I need to do
some work on this)
As I now knew
where they were living in Canada, I tried to find a death for the father as
I suspected he had died prior to David's return. It was indeed the case. It
also gave the father as David and the mother as Susan McNab which absolutely
confirmed every other piece of evidence!
The residence given on the death
certificate was 71 Vanhorne Street, York, Toronto. The wife's name looks
like it could be Jessie which was certainly another form of Janet here in
Scotland.
Janet Condie Meiklejohn
(1874-1934)
I have
discovered the death certificate for Janet Meiklejohn. She died on the 1st
October 1934 at Strachan Avenue, Tisdale, Cochrane, Ontario, Canada. She had
cut her own throat with a razor - how horrible.
The 'adopted
son' David Meiklejohn registered her death and she was buried on the 5th
October 1934 at Prospect Cemetery, Toronto.
Janet's
parents were John Condie and Mary Forrest. They had lived at Devonside,
Tillicoultry for a number of years, where John was a coal miner. Janet's
family lived in Toronto and they took her remains to be buried with her
husband.
I would now
love to find out if the son ever married and had descendants as this would
solve a long standing brick wall I have had and would be the final piece of
the jigsaw.
What became of David Meiklejohn?
David Meiklejohn married Irene Elliot at South Porcupine,
Timmins, Ontario on the 25th June 1938. David died 04
September 1982 at Chemainus, BC, Canada and Irene died on the 11
November 1961 at Vancouver, BC, Canada. Irene was aged 65. This
means she was closer to 42 when she married and David was 30. I do
not hope to find any children. So this will be the end of the
Meiklejohn line on this branch. Thank
you to Karina Douglas for her help in finding this.
