The Mankin Family

The Mankin family are included in this web site since Alexander Meiklejohn married Margaret Mankin. Not a great deal is known about the family but what I do know, I will put on here in the hope that somebody may find a connection at some point and be able to fill in the gaps.

The Mankin Family

George Mankin & Margaret Busby

When Margaret Mankin married, first David Dalrymple and then his half cousin Alexander Meiklejohn, her father was on both certificates as George Mankin, plate layer. From this we know who her father was and his occupation at the time.

We visited Stockton-on-Tees some years ago to try and find out more about the family which is where I was able to solve a few of the puzzles relating to the Meiklejohn family. We found the burial records for Alexander and his wife but also discovered from grave stones, Margaret's parents and her brother. Sadly there is no stone for Margaret or Alexander but they are buried in between her brother and parents.

From the grave stones we can now see that Margaret's parents and brother were:-

George Mankin,

who died December 1st 1890

aged 63 years

also Margaret

Wife of the above

who died February 27th 1891

aged 60 years

George Henry Mankin

son of George & Margaret Mankin

who died 10th March 1891

aged 22 years.

Now we have her mother's first name and from the dates and ages I was able to discover that George Mankin married Margaret Busby 21st October 1852, Parish Chapel, Brompton by Northallerton, Yorkshire, listing George's father as John Mankin, labourer and Margaret's father as John Busby, farmer.
