How I found the Meiklejohn side
I never knew my grand mother as she died before I was born. I
had no idea what her name was, let alone her maiden surname nor where she was
from.
I found out who Christina Meiklejohn was from her children's
birth records and then her marriage record. How she came to be in Scotland was
another matter as she was born in Stockton-on Tees, England. By uncovering her
origin, I found a mystery to solve.
Why was she in Tillicoultry?
I found out who her parents were from her birth certificate.
Her father being Alexander McEwan Meiklejohn. I then had his marriage
certificate but no father was given - brick wall !
Trying to find which Alexander Meiklejohn he was proved
rather difficult as there were many. I did find one at 10 Union Street,
Tillicoultry on the 1881 census. I thought this looked like a possibility as I
had been told that my grandmother had been brought up in Union Street. After
eliminating other possibilities I purchased the birth certificate for this Alex.
Meiklejohn. Now began a great mystery - this certificate had a whole load of
information from the register of corrected entries. It named his father, gave
his occupation and address and etc. He was really Alexander Stevenson! Then came
the
Stevenson family.
So why was Alexander down in Stockton-on-Tees?
Why were his children in Tillicoultry?
The answers are found from unravelling the family history.
