Thomas Isaac 1864-1922

Thomas Isaac, born 27th May 1864, Brynamman, Carmarthenshire and died 16th December 1922, Monte Video Cottage, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset. He married Sarah Anne Porter  4th November 1886, Parish Church, Chickerell, Weymouth. She was born 12th April 1864, Putton Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset and died 24th September 1944, 14 Australia Road, Chickerell.

Thomas is buried in Chickerell Parish Churchyard.

On the marriage certificate, Thomas' father is given as David Isaac and under his occupation it just states, 'colliery'. I have tried to find the birth record for Thomas but to no avail. The information about his date and place of birth is from his gravestone but something must be incorrect. I have also tried following the whereabouts of Nelson Richardson to see if Thomas was employed by him before they were at Chickerell. However, it would seem that The Richardson's moved to Montevideo about 1884 so Thomas slipped through the census net. I have also, unsuccessfully tried the censuses for a male Isaac born in Brynamman. This is now a brick wall. The only clue might be that Nelson Richardson's parents were in Swansea and a couple of family entries further on in the census, there is actually a family called Isaac.

He was at Montevideo, Chickerell, Weymouth in both 1891 and 1901 where he was working for a Nelson Moore Richardson, a retired Barrister for whom he worked for 26 years as a groom and gardener and coachman.

Nelson Moore Richardson was a witness to Thomas and Sarah's marriage; as well as Eliza Taylor and Robert Goding, who was a brick maker on the 1881 census as was probably working with Sarah's father.

The children of Sarah Porter and Thomas Isaac are:-

Florence Ann Isaac, born 23 August 1887, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset.

Louisa Jane Isaac, b. 16th October 1888, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset.

Gladys May Isaac, b. 1892, Weymouth

William Thomas Isaac, b. 18 Jul 1894, Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset.

Gwendoline Beatrice Isaac, b. January, 1901, Weymouth.

Helen Dorothy Isaac, born 1903 at Weymouth.

Margery Violet Isaac, born 12th March 1905 at Chickerell, Weymouth, Dorset. Margery died aged 2 years in the first half of 1907.

I would love to know what became of the rest of the family. Any help would be appreciated.

WELSH-ENGLISH

It has now been discovered that Thomas could only speak Welsh when he arrived in Chickerell. He obviously learned to speak English over the years.

It would seem very odd for him to just turn up somewhere in England expecting a job when he couldn't speak the language. Therefore my assumption that he had known Mr Richardson a long time gains strength. He would be able to understand Thomas and could translate for him. There was an Isaac family next to the Richardsons on the census fro Swansea and it now looks likely that this was actually Thomas family. It would also explain why Nelson Richardson was a third witness on Thomas' marriage certificate.
