Charles Stevenson
(1805-1873)
Charles was born 5th April, 1805
and baptised at Cumbernauld. He was the second son between William Stevenson and Helen
Grindlay. He would have been about fourteen years old when the family moved to
Clackmannan. When his father died in 1839, Charles was a farmer at Redside in the County
of Haddington and the farm still exists today. On the 1841 Census, there is Charles at
Redside with an Eliza Stevenson aged 17. She was not born in the county and was living on
own means. This must have been the youngest sister, Ellison. There is not much by way of
information on the 1841 census but there was also an Elizabeth Black, aged 22 and of
Independent means. She was not born in the county either and would not be a servant due to
the 'Independent Means'. How she relates to this family is still unknown. Charles
was the Editor of
the North British Agriculturalist Newspaper until his death. Charles never
married and died on 19th October 1873 at 35 Regent Street, Portobello.

Where Charles died.
I have
discovered an article in the Scotsman Newspaper which invites anyone who is
interested in the estate of Charles to make contact with the legal advisors.
I cannot reproduce it here for legal reasons but it is available on the
Scotsman's pay per view web site. I am not including a link to that site as
it is so full of errors and I had the utmost difficulty with it . I do not
want everyone complaining that the link does not work etc.
