(1873 -
)
Hermione
Alexander Stevenson
was born on the 31st October 1873 in Liverpool. She
was the daughter of Robert Alexander Stevenson and Louise Mingaud. Louise died a
few months after giving birth and Hermione was (as far as I have been told)
brought up by a family in Ireland.
(The family must have lost contact with
each other and this is possibly why Robert was thought never to have married nor
had children). Hermione
married Alfred Ernest Mills
in
1892 in Wolverhampton,
England. He was born about 1871 in Malvern, Worcestershire, England. Hermione
died in 1952 at Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
Hermione was located on the 1891 census
residing at Primrose Court, Warden Street, Malvern, Worcestershire, and in 1901
at 5 Thatford Avenue, Brunswick Road, Balsall Heath, Worcestershire. In 1891 she
is listed as a niece, therefore, must be with her mother's family, her
occupation is an assistant laundress. In 1901 Ernest is a tailor.
A story was passed on to me about
Hermione which obviously came down through the family but now seems very
unlikely. She was reputedly brought up in Ireland, which is possible as her
mother died when she was only a few months old. However, she was supposed to
have spent some years in the Sorbonne in France. I seem to remember being told
she trained as an opera singer but I could be getting confused with the many
other families I am dealing with! As she has been found on the 1891 census as an
assistant laundress when she was a teenager, then it looks as if the story about
the Sorbonne is merely a story.
In 1891, Hermione is residing with her
mother's sister, Mary Minguad who married John Gines.
