John Dumbreck

(1825-1899)

John Dumbreck was born 16 December 1825 and christened 28 December 1825in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire, and died 29 March 1899 in 29 Westport, Lanark. He married Mary Wilson 7 December 1845 in Lanark, Lanarkshire. She was born about 1827, and died 1895 in Lanark, Lanarkshire.

John followed in his father's footsteps as a Hostler at Lanark. In 1861 and 1871 they lived at 16 West port and in 1891 the family were at 11 West Port Street, Lanark. In 1881, John was a Driver Of Post Gig. He died from natural causes and old age.

Children of John Dumbreck and Mary Wilson are:

Mary Dumbreck was born 27 December 1846, Lanark, Lanarkshire and christened, 21 February 1847, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire. In 1871 she was a pirn winder. By 1891 she has gone to New Zealnd.

Margaret (Maggie) Stevenson Dumbreck was born 14 May 1853, Lanark, Lanarkshire and died 12 April 1919, of senility at the Poorhouse, Lanark. Her occupation in 1891 was a varnisher and she stayed at 29 West Port, Lanark until her death. She died unmarried and had no issue. She was a cotton weaver in 1871 and in 1901 she still resided at 29 West port and was a Hat Box Finisher (varnisher)

David Wilson Dumbreck was born 26 March 1857, Lanark, Lanarkshire and died from bronchitis after several weeks on 27 June 1865, West Port, Lanark. He also had pulmonary consumption for months prior to his death.

Lindsay Dumbreck was born 23 August 1860, Lanark, Lanarkshire and died 5 May 1863, West Port, Lanark from croup for two days.

William Wilson Dumbreck was born 3 October 1863, Lanark, Lanarkshire. He died in January 1865, Lanark.

Janet Dumbreck was born 15 April 1869, Lanark, Lanarkshire and died 14 January 1918, 29 West Port. Lanark. She is listed as Jessie W Dumbreck on the 1881 census. Janet is often changed to Jessie in Scotland.

The only two descendants with issue are Mary and Janet. With all of Margaret Stevenson Dumbreck's children dying out and only John as a descendant with issue, it is very sad. When you see the above finishing up her days in the poorhouse after all the money that could have been theirs - and ours  - it is a very sad tale indeed.

NOTE:- Back in 1919 there was no National Health Service and ordinary working folk would be admitted to the poorhouse which was the only sort of hospital available to them. It does not necessarily mean they spent years living there.
