Margaret Stevenson

(1794-1840)

Margaret Stevenson was born 12th December 1794 Christening: 14th December 1794, in Port Glasgow Renfrew, and died January 1840. She married John Dumbreck before 1819.

John Dumbreck was an Innkeeper at Cumbernauld but became bankrupt. He then moved to Glasgow where he was a coach driver. The money from Margaret's father which should have gone to her, but she died only six months after him, was supposed to go to her sons. However, the boys were not old enough and so the father was in charge of their affairs. He was not entitled to the money under the terms of the will, but was given the money for the boys. This was not legal due to the trustees and their lawyers knowing that John Dumbreck was a bankrupt. This caused legal wrangling for many years with a charge of fraud brought against the lawyer of the trust fund. If any of you wonder why we are not all rich, as we should be!, then it is all because of John Dumbreck!!!

The information now found (17 Nov 2004) shows that The family were at Cumbernauld Inn then Carbeans (that is what it appeared to be) Cumbernauld. Then they moved to Airdrie Inn. It seems that they were in Edinburgh for a time in 1832. John then moved to Glasgow but whether this was before or after Margaret Stevenson's death, is yet to be established. It is possible that they were at Cumbernauld Inn when a murder took place.

Children of Margaret Stevenson and John Dumbreck are:

William Stevenson Dumbreck was born 21 July 1819 and christened 19 August 1819 at Cumbernauld. He died before 29 May 1828 as a subsequent child was given this name.

Old Parish Record - Cumbernauld

29th July

Dumbreck, John & Margt Stevenson, Cumbd Inn, had a child born & baptised 19th same (August) month, name of William Stevenson.

Margaret Dumbreck was born 2 August 1821 and christened 21 August 1821, Cumbernauld. (It is my suspicion that she too may have died as she had no mention in the legal document and was not old enough to claim the money in her own right).

Old Parish Record - Cumbernauld

2nd August

Dumbreck, John & Margt Stevenson, Cumbd Inn, had a child born & baptised 21st same month, name of Margaret.

JOHN DUMBRECK was born 16 December 1825 and christened 28 December 1825 at Carbeans? Cumbernauld.

Old Parish Record - Cumbernauld

Dumbreck, John & Margt Stevenson, Carbeans?, had a child born & baptised 28th same month, named John.

Alexander Dumbreck was born 29 May 1828 and christened 18 June 1828 at Airdrie.

William Stevenson Dumbreck was born 29 May 1828 and christened 18 June 1828 at Airdrie.

Old Parish Record - Airdrie

Dumbreck, William Stevenson and Alexr Dumbreck, twin children of John, Airdrie Inn & Margt Stevenson, were born 29th May and baptised 25th June 1828.

These two children would also be under the legal age to claim their inheritance from their mothers estate. So far as I have found, they made no claim which suggests to me that they may not have survived. They would only be 11½ when their mother died if they survived.

Charles Dumbreck was born about 1836. Occupation: Coach Driver, Glasgow.

Margaret would be 37 when Charles was born.

The only record for a Charles Dumbreck which would fit with this one, is a death record. He died 29th May 1866 aged 33 years. He died from Bright's disease of the kidneys and dilation of heart at the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow. He was a labourer and single. He lived at 9 High Street, Glasgow and a Margaret Thomson signed his death certificate. She was an acquaintance and also lived at 9 High Street, which was a tenement block. As this Charles was also in Glasgow and about the correct age, remember that an 'acquaintance' would not know all the actual details, then this must be the correct Charles' death. As I now have a better idea of how old Charles was from the 1851 census, this tallies with the age on his death certificate.
