Mary Stevenson & daughter Janet Galt Ferguson.

Janet was born in June 1891 so this photo was taken c1892

I suspect this was Janet's first birthday.

Picture kindly sent from Susan Ferguson

These photos were sent to me by Susan Ferguson.

The first picture was taken by Photographer, B Rhodes, 39 Eastgate Street, Gloucester. The second had 'Mary Stevenson - Fownehope, Herefordshire and Tim Gillard, Clarence Street, Gloucester. Prize medals 1879' on the back.

From these photos we can guess at what age Mary was when they were taken. On the second one she must have been 23 years old. If the photographer had won medals in 1879 then this one would certainly have been taken after this or the information would not be written on the back! We do know that her father was in Gloucester in 1881.

Mary Alexander Stevenson was born 18th April 1856 in Park Farm, Clackmannan, and died 1896 in Stockport. She married William Ferguson on the 9th June 1882 at the Register Office, Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire. He was the son of William Ferguson (carrier) and was born about 1850 in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland, and died after 7 July 1911.

Mary lived at 25 Broad Street, Alloa and then 11 Forth Place, Stirling and also Nibley Farm, Awre, Gloucestershire, with her parents. In 1891 she was at Ardwick, St Thomas, Lancashire.

William Ferguson was a Draper & Clothier and the family lived at 138 Old Manchester Road, Heaton Chapel, Stockport in 1901. They were still at this address in 1911. When he married Mary, William was a widower, draper and lived at 13 Union Street, Ardwick, Manchester. This street still exists but whether or not is is still the same old houses, I do not know. Mary's residence was at ? House Near Blakeney, Gloucestershire. This is near to Awre where Robert resided when he first went to Gloucestershire. I am still trying to figure out what the name of the house was!

Children of MARY STEVENSON and WILLIAM FERGUSON are:

William Blair Ferguson was born 1883 at Ardwick, Lancashire. In 1901 he was a Clerk CC. He MIGHT have married Janet Taylor in 1914, Manchester. His occupation in 1911 was that of a draper & clothier and he was living with his father at Old Manchester Road.

Allan Stevenson Ferguson was born about 1885 at Ardwick, Lancashire. he was with his father in 1911 and was an accountant's clerk.

Archibald Ferguson was born about 1887 at Ardwick, Lancashire. In 1911 he was a draughtsman and was a boarder at 79 Manchster Road, Altrincham, Cheshire.

Robert Alexander Ferguson was born 1889 at Manchester. Apparently not married by 1916. His occupation was a credit draper in 1916. He obviously worked for his father's business. He was a draper's clerk in 1911 and lived with his father. He signed up with the Royal Field Artillery (136899) on the 8th may 1916 and both his and his father's address at that time was 460 Manchester Road, Heaton Chapel, Stockport. He was discharged in 1919 and according to the records, he was not married at this time.

Janet Galt Ferguson was born 1891 at Manchester. She married a Robert Allan in 1921 at Stockport. She lived with her father in 1911.

John Batcham Ferguson was born 1895 at Stockport, Heaton Chapel. It looks likely that he was killed in WW1. He lived with his father in 1911 and was an apprentice salesman, dress goods.
