Joseph Wyle 1860-1929

Joseph Wyle was born 1860, his father was a blacksmith and started a foundry around
that time. (Little is known about this at this moment). Joseph was the eldest son of
Thomas Wyle and, after Thomas died April 30th 1908, Joseph carried on the
factory which was named Joseph Wyle and Co., Providence Works, Birmingham Road,
Blackheath.
The Wyles lived at 8-9 Birmingham Road in the West Midlands, and they lived next
door to James and Eleanor Weston. Joseph married one of their daughters, Mercy Weston, and
they had nine children. The children worked in the factory, however, Mercy Wyle (nee
Weston) died at the age of 44yrs in 1904. Joseph then married Mercy's younger sister, Ann
Weston, about 1908. They had one child, Nellie Wyle. Nellie also worked in the factory,
and after Joseph died Feb 8th 1929, she took over from him with her mother Ann.
Although Nellie took over the running of the factory, it was found to be in trouble
financially and Nellie looked to the banks for a loan to build up the business again. When
her mother, Ann Wyle, died April 23rd 1950, the business was left to Nellie
Wyle. Nellie, or Ellen as she was known, was a very astute businesswoman and didnt
suffer fools gladly. She married Stanley Samson Beese on Dec 25th 1933, he too, worked in
the factory.
Stanley Beese and Nellie were unable to have children, Nellie becoming severely bent
over owing to an arthritic condition that had developed over the years, so they fostered a
young girl Elizabeth, later adopting her. Elizabeth Beese became an employee at the
factory before it closed in the 1970s.
