Keziah Wyle

(1883-1930)

Keziah Wyle was born 28th March 1883 in Durrington, Amesbury, Wiltshire and died in 1930 at Williams, Western Australia. She married James Kellow 19th August 1907 in Parish Church, Tilshead, Amesbury, Wilts, son of George Kellow and Sarah Jane Churcher. He was born in 1884 in Orcheston St George, Wiltshire. Keziah was known as Kezzie by the family. She was at Tilshead in 1891 and then at Church Street, Calne, Wilts working as a General Servant (domestic) in 1901. James Kellow was a Farm Labourer.

The family emigrated to Western Australia which must have been between 1911 and 1916. From 1916 until 1936 they were at Tilshead Farm, Springhurst, East Wagin, Williams, Forrest, W Australia, and possibly a few years either side.

Children of Keziah Wyle and James Kellow are:

William Charles James Kellow, born in 1907 at Amesbury. Went to Australia with his parents.

Henry John Kellow, born in 1908 at Amesbury. He is a only a possible son at the moment.

Doris Maude Kellow, born 1909 at Amesbury. She is a only a possible son at the moment.

Gladys R Kellow, born 1910 at Amesbury. She is a only a possible son at the moment.

Edith Maude Kellow, born 1911 at Amesbury and died 4th May 1993 at Carlisle, Western Australia. She is a definite child. Went to Australia with his parents. She married James Baty, 1935 at Swan, Western Australia.

Mary Louisa Kellow, born 1913, Western Australia and died 25th April 1997 at Armadale, Western Australia. She married Arnold Daniel McIver in 1935 at Williams, Western Australia. He was born about 1899 and died 04 Mar 1983 at Armadale, Western Australia.

Alma Florence Kellow, born 1916 at Katanning, Western Australia. She married Lawrence Byrnes and may have returned to UK. (I also have a note that she could have been married to William Downie Campbell McGhie in 1942 at Geraldton, Western Australia - he was born in 1917 and died 14 October 1980 at Nedlands, Western Australia)

Edward Henry Kellow, born 1919 at Katanning, Western Australia. He married Dorothy E Oliver in 1948 at Williams, Western Australia. (I also have a note that he may have married a W Carlsile but more information is needed to clarify this).

James Joseph Kellow, born 1920 at Katanning, Western Australia and died 10 September 2006 at Yokine, Western Australia. He was married to Enid.

Kathleen Nancy Kellow, born 7th August 1924 at Katanning, Kukerin, Western Australia and died 4th August 2000 at Collie, Western Australia. She married Keith Board in 1948 at Wellington, Western Australia.

In 1901, James Kellow was at Orcheston St George, Wiltshire and was employed as a Teamster on Farm (ag. Horse). Keziah was at Church Street, Calne, Wilts and a general servant. When they married in 1907 he was at Tilshead and worked as an agricultural labourer.

It is known that they had several children in Wiltshire before the emigrated which was between 1911 and 1916. Some of the first children listed above may not be theirs and others might be!

I have been told that they had 21 grand children and 22 great grandchildren!.

I discovered them on electoral registers for 1916 and 1925 at Tilshead Farm, Springhurst, East Wagin, Williams, Forrest, W Australia. I also found James listed there in 1936 by which time Keziah had died. There were some other Kellows listed and I suspect that these were James siblings or other relations who had gone with him or before.

I also found a James Kellow returning to Southampton, England on the 20th July 1959 from Sydney, Australia on board the 'Strathaird'.  He was stated as being born 15 September 1884, I do think this is the same man. there is a Winifred Kellow with him but nothing to give a clue as to her relationship, perhaps a second wife? She was born 22nd August 1903 so she was 19 years his junior. They had returned for a 6 month stay and their address in England was Mrs E Fulford, 70 Shakespeare Rd, Acton, London, W3. I have been told that James died in 1960 and I wonder if he ever made it back to Australia? His occupation on this record stated that he was a farmer. How many James Kellow's were born about that year? Perhaps a good few. How many were farmers? Some? How many were in Australia? and How many were from UK? the odds get less and the weight swings more towards this being the same man. It is my suspicion that Winifred was indeed his wife. After all Keziah died leaving some very young children and he would certainly need help looking after them.

His son, William C J Kellow worked as a teamster and it might be him that is listed at North Kukerin, Williams, Forrest, W Australia in 1936.

This is as much as I have been able to find out from the limited sources available to me for Western Australia. The 'definite' children their spouses have been given to me by Marjorie Young as well as pretty much everything else for Keziah! So thanks to her for all that.
