Queenie Keziah Alsford Wyle
(1905-1989)
Queenie Keziah
Alsford Wyle, born 20th September
1905, 9 Woodstock Road, Salisbury,
Wiltshire. She died 4th August 1989, Wexham Park Hospital, Slough. Queenie
married Cornelius John Cotterell in 1934
at Easthampstead, Berkshire. Queenie was
brought up by her father. Queenie lived
at Binfield Berkshire and she had also
lived at Woodley. Cornelius was a kiln
burner. They had one daughter together,
Mary.
So far as Queenie's daughter Mary
knew, her mother never met her own mother. However, I was told a story by her
half sister, whom she never knew about, which led me to discover Queenie.
Sarah's daughter told me that she
remembered when she was a girl, of a very smartly dressed woman coming to visit
her mother. This woman gave Sarah a brooch and gave her a watch. Back in those
days a watch was a very expensive present to give to a little girl. She told me
that she had always wondered if this was indeed her mother's daughter.
I looked back the birth records and
found Queenie. With her middle name being Keziah there was no doubt whom this
was and with the knowledge of the name insertions in the Wyle family I suspected
that her father was a Mr Alsford. A search of the censuses showed me that this
name was in the Salisbury area. I think her father would have been William
George Alsford.
Mary told me that her mother was
brought up by her father and was always known as Queenie Alsford. Whatever his
first name, he re-married and had a daughter called Alma Alsford. Queenie moved
away and lived at Bunfield in Berkshire. She married Cornelius John Cotterell in
1934.
Mary and Cornelius had three
children, first a daughter Primrose, who sadly lived only two days, born in
1936. Then they had a son John in 1938 but he died after birth. They then had a
daughter Mary who is very much alive and kicking!
I must try to get hold of some
photos for this page. |
