The first mention
of football in Clackmannanshire, found thus far, was a
match played on Saturday afternoon, 6th September 1862.
The football game was played between the young men of
Tillicoultry and Alva, in a field in Alva which was
owned by Mr Alex. Morison. They played for a full 90
minutes although it was reported that Alva won by 5
games. Presumably this meant by 5 goals. After the game,
all those who had taken part, were invited to Alva
House, then home of the Lord Advocate, James Johnstone, of which three of
his sons played on the Alva side. The players were
apparently served with a 'sumptuous repast'.
Although some form of football would
have been played before this time, it shows that an
organised match had been arranged. It wasn't until 1873
that the Scottish Football Association was formed and
with that, proper rules and regulations. |
