William Mankin

(1867-1929)

William Mankin was born about 1867 in Picton, Yorkshire, England, and died 14 February 1929 in ? Gas Works Glasgow. He married Annie Morrison 1889 in Glasgow, daughter of John Morrison and Agnes Stewart. She was born about 1867 in England, and died 17 October 1936 the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow.

William and Annie were both born in England. Annie was living in Glasgow when they married and William resided in Stockton. Obviously he went to Glasgow to marry Annie. Their first child was born in England but then they moved back to Glasgow and it looks as though she had siblings there. See census.

William died from an injury to the head and died at the gas works. (The actual writing is unclear and looks like it begins with a 'D' and may be two or three words before Gas Works) It sounds as thought there had been an accident there. He lived at 3 Walker Court, Stockton in 1871 and then 1 Simpson St, Thornaby, York, England. In 1889 he was an Iron Worker (Journeyman); in 1899 a general labourer and in 1919 a Gas Works Labourer. When he married his residence was given as 57 York Street, South Stockton and when he died he lived at 653 Maryhill Road, Glasgow. Annie was a domestic servant and lived at 7 Belfast Street, Maryhill. The family were at 7 Agnes Street, Maryhill before moving to 79 Gairbraid Street and then number 653. From all the other information it would seem that William was actually a fitter and turner for the Gas Works.

Children of William Mankin and Annie Morrison are:

Agnes Mankin, born about 1890 in England and died from Measles and Bronchitits, 9 September 1891, 7 Agnes Street, Maryhill, Glasgow.

Robert Mankin was born in 10 August 1892 at 7 Agnes Street, Maryhill, Glasgow. He was a boot salesman. He died on 17 July 1928 at 3 Clyde Street, Millport, Bute. He was never married.

John Morrison Mankin was born 15 August 1894 at 7 Agnes Street, Maryhill, Glasgow. His residence on 14 February 1929 was 15 Benview Street, Glasgow. (See Note Left) He died on the 29 March 1975 at the Royal Infirmary, Greenock.

William Mankin was born  14 September 1896, 79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Lanarkshire. He died 5 December 1977 at Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow.

Agnes Mankin was born 31 January 1899 at  79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow, Lanarkshire and died in 21 December 1934.

George Mankin was born in 5 August 1901 at 79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow and died 21 August 1901 at 79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow.

Alexander Morrison Mankin was born in 20 December 1903, at 79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow.

Maud Mary Cowan Mankin was born 22 March 1905 at 79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow(I wonder if this is a reference to the Cowan which appears as a middle name to one of the Dalrymples?) She was found dead on 20 November 1973 at 9 Lindale Road, Glasgow. She was never married and had been a shop assitant.

Annie Mankin was born 12 August 1907 at 79 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow. She died in 1907.

Children

If there is any other information, regarding any of the children, then these children will appear on this navigation bar.

John 1894
William 1896
Agnes 1899
Alexander 1902

Because of this Mankin family it is now my firm belief that the Mankin family actually knew the Crawford family who lived at Maryhill before my grand parents actually married and created the connection. See the Crawford Web Site.

I have also been told that a Maggie Mankin worked at Patons Mill in Tillicoultry in about 1940. She is thought to have lived in Alva. If so then she must be a descendant of this Maryhill family group. Watch this space!
